The CrossFit Open is 1 month away! It is February 23rd – March 27th. What is The CrossFit Open you may ask? It is a worldwide online fitness competition hosted by CrossFit, Inc. and is part 1 of a 3 part qualifier for The CrossFit Games – a competition designed to find the “Fittest on Earth”.
Whoa, slow your roll – what if I am not training to be the “fittest on earth”, but simply training to be in better shape, be a stronger person, play with my kids and grand kids, fight a history of obesity in my family, etc…? Guess what, The Open is perfect for that! It’s a great opportunity that comes around once every year that we as a community and you as an athlete get to PROVE or TEST your fitness. Even if you just started CrossFit, it’s a great way to benchmark yourself for your fitness journey for months and years to come.
Personally, I have been doing the CrossFit Open since it’s inception in 2011. Each year I look forward to testing myself and giving myself an idea of what I have improved on and what I still need to work on. It’s not like I plan on making it to the next level of competition or even to The CrossFit Games, but it’s an important physical and psychological part of my training and journey towards better health and overall wellness.
So, here’s how it works! Each week, there is a LIVE announcement on Thursday for the workout of the week immediately followed by 2 (or more) top tier athletes in the CrossFit community going head to head for your viewing pleasure. Watching this is worth the price of admission alone and will get you fired up! You then have until Monday (4 days) to complete and submit your score to The CrossFit Games website as a part of our affiliate – CrossFit KMC!
We will do the workout as a community, in class every Friday and culminate The Open in week 5 with our very own head to head showdown called “Friday Night Lights”! You simply show up and we’ll take care of the rest – scoring, movement standards, warm-up, etc…it will be run very similar to a class. This will be held at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, March 24th, so mark your calendars, save the date, whatever- just be here!
I understand there may be nervousness, apprehension, and maybe even a mild case of bowel distress associated with testing yourself or trying something new. But let me tell you from experience, this will be something you’ll be glad you signed up for and did! AND, you’ll keep coming back year after year because it’s awesome.
Visit games.crossfit.com for more information, to view previous workouts, and to SIGN UP! Make sure you register under our affiliate – CrossFit KMC! As always, please let Casey or myself know if you have any questions. Let’s do this!
